Inside the workshop · Jaipur, Rajasthan

Every piece we export leaves this floor.

No trading office, no sourcing agent, no warehouse of finished stock bought from a market. Uthsavi cuts, joints, carves, finishes and packs in its own Jaipur workshop, with artisan partners whose families have worked this craft for generations. This page shows you exactly how, because an importer should not have to take that on faith.

Why Jaipur

The one place this furniture can still be made by hand at a commercial price.

Jaipur has been a woodworking city for centuries. Carving, turning, jaali work, cane weaving, skills that pass down inside families and cannot be reproduced by a machine line at any price. What the city does not have much of is suppliers who can talk to an overseas buyer in the language of moisture content, CBM, carton marking and inspection reports. Uthsavi was built to sit in both places at once.

Skill that is inherited, not trained

Our carvers and weavers learned from their fathers and grandfathers. A carved headboard panel is not a CNC pattern repeated, it is cut by a person reading the grain in front of them, which is why two pieces are never mechanically identical.

Hardwood, close to source

Sheesham, Mango and Babul come from established regional timber markets, not from an importer’s container. Short supply lines mean we can reject a lot and re-select instead of building with whatever arrived.

Built to export standards, not local ones

Seasoning, hardware, packing and documentation are set to what your market clears, not to what sells in an Indian showroom. Those are two different specifications and we quote the export one.

How a piece is made

Nine stages between a timber log and a marked carton.

This is the actual sequence on our floor. If you visit, or join a video walkthrough, this is the order you will see it in.

01

Timber selection

Logs and sawn stock are chosen by hand at the timber market. We look at grain, knots, sapwood and straightness. Anything with a crack that will open in a heated home is left behind, not planed over.

02

Air drying, then kiln

Stock is air-dried in stacks, then kiln-treated to bring moisture content to the range your market needs, typically 8–10% for centrally heated homes in the USA, UK and Europe, higher for humid coastal markets. Measured before cutting, and again before finishing.

03

Cutting and sizing

Components are cut to the approved sample’s dimensions, in millimetres or inches as your drawing specifies. Every batch is cut against the signed-off sample, never against a previous order.

04

Joinery

Mortise-and-tenon and dowelled joints, cut and fitted rather than screwed and filled. This is the stage that decides whether a piece survives a sea container and twenty years in a home, so it is also our first QC checkpoint.

05

Hand carving and turning

Carved panels, jaali fronts, turned legs and posts go to artisan partners who do only that work. Depth and pattern are matched to the approved sample, and adjustable, if your market wants the detail softened or deepened.

06

Cane and rattan weaving

Medallion backs, cane fronts and woven panels are hand-woven onto the frame. Weave tension is checked by hand, because a loose weave will sag in transit long before a customer sees it.

07

Assembly and dry fit

The piece is assembled complete before finishing, checked for square, wobble and drawer or door alignment, and then taken apart again where the design ships knock-down.

08

Sanding and finishing

Progressive sanding, then stain and lacquer in a dedicated finishing area. Natural, honey, walnut, teak, dark chocolate, whitewash, distressed, matte, satin or gloss, matched against your swatch or Pantone reference and recorded so repeat orders match.

09

Final QC and export packing

Piece-by-piece check against the approved sample, then knock-down where possible, foam and corner protection, moisture barrier, five-ply cartons, your labels and carton marking, palletised or loose-loaded for your freight mode.

And then it is photographed

Packed and marked cartons are photographed before dispatch, so what left the workshop is on record before it enters the freight chain.

The artisans

The people this company was built around.

Uthsavi did not start with a factory and then look for workers. It started with the craft. Ms Sonika Singh moved to Jaipur, found woodworking families making extraordinary pieces for a market that paid them very little, and built a company that sends their work to homes on the other side of the world, with their name still attached to it.

Most of India’s carved and cane furniture reaches an overseas showroom through three or four hands. The artisan is the first and the worst paid. By the time the piece is on a container, nobody can tell you who made it, and the maker has no idea where it went.

We work the other way round. Our artisan partners are long-standing units and families, each specialising in one thing: carving, turning, cane and rattan weaving, upholstery. They get year-round work rather than seasonal spikes, they are paid per piece at rates agreed before the job starts, and their work is credited.

That matters commercially, not just morally. A carver who has built the same bed for you eleven times knows your tolerances. An artisan unit with steady work does not disappear mid-order to take a better-paying job elsewhere. Continuity of people is what makes a repeat order actually match the first one.

For your own marketing

We provide artisan photographs, craft notes, workshop footage and the story behind each technique at no cost, cleared for use in your catalogue, website, product tags and retail displays. If provenance is part of how you sell, take ours, it is real and it is documentable.

The founder
“The craft was never the problem. Getting it to the people who would value it, that was the problem worth solving.”

Ms Sonika Singh founded Uthsavi and runs it. Kolkata-born, Delhi-trained, she moved to Jaipur and found a woodworking tradition capable of making what the metros could not: real hardwood furniture, made to order, without a luxury import’s price tag.

Uthsavi is a women-led business in a trade that is almost entirely not. For buyers with supplier diversity mandates that is a reportable, documentable fact, we provide ownership and registration paperwork for vendor onboarding. For everyone else it simply means the person who decides is the person you are talking to.

Built for your market, not ours

What changes on the floor when a piece is made for export.

A bed built for a Jaipur customer and the same bed built for a retailer in Manchester are not the same product. These are the things we change, and the reasons importers ask us to.

Moisture content for heated homes

Kilned to 8–10% for the USA, UK and northern Europe. A piece seasoned for Indian humidity will shrink and split in a centrally heated room, this is the single most common failure in Indian furniture exports and it is entirely avoidable.

Your market’s sizing

US King and Queen, UK Super King and Double, EU 160×200, built to the mattress your customer actually owns. Seat heights and table heights adjusted to local convention, not copied from an Indian drawing.

Knock-down where it counts

Designed to come apart for the container and for your customer’s staircase, with fittings, hardware bags and assembly instructions in your language.

Finish safety and disclosure

Lacquers and stains named on the spec sheet so your compliance team can check them against your market’s rules before the order, not after the shipment.

Fumigation and biosecurity paperwork

Treatment, fumigation and phytosanitary certification prepared for strict-clearance markets such as Australia and New Zealand, arranged before dispatch, not scrambled at the port.

Packing engineered for the route

Sea, air or courier, each gets different protection. Five-ply cartons, moisture barrier, edge and corner armour, palletised or loose-loaded to your loading plan and CBM target.

Your brand on the carton

Private label carton artwork, barcodes, SKU marking, care cards and country-of-origin labelling, printed here so your warehouse can receive and scan it directly.

Replacement parts held back

On a container order we keep spare hardware, touch-up finish and a small stock of vulnerable components, so a transit scuff does not cost you a whole unit.

Quality control

Four checkpoints, and what fails at each one.

Every importer asks what our QC actually consists of. Here it is, checkpoint by checkpoint, including what we reject, because a QC list that never rejects anything is not a QC list.

Incoming timberGrain, knots, sapwood, straightness and moisture content. Rejected: stock with checks or shakes, live sapwood, and anything above the moisture band for the destination market.
Checkpoint 1, FrameJoint fit, squareness, dimensions against the approved sample. Rejected: loose or gapped joints, out-of-square frames, dimensional drift beyond tolerance. Corrected at this stage or the component is remade.
Checkpoint 2, Pre-finishSanding quality, carving depth and symmetry, cane tension, drawer and door alignment, hardware fit, second moisture reading. Rejected: tool marks, uneven carving, slack weave, binding drawers.
Checkpoint 3, FinalFinish colour and sheen against the recorded reference, coverage in recesses and undersides, stability, function of every moving part. Rejected: colour drift between pieces of the same batch, thin coverage, blotching, wobble.
Checkpoint 4, PackingComponent count against the packing list, hardware bags, instructions, protection at corners and edges, carton marking and labelling. Cartons photographed before dispatch.
Your inspectionThird-party agencies (SGS, Bureau Veritas, TÜV) or your own agent, at any checkpoint you choose. Production is scheduled around their visit and the report is shared with you.

Frequently asked questions

What buyers ask about the workshop.

Is the furniture really made in your own workshop?
Cutting, joinery, assembly, finishing, quality control and export packing all happen in our own Jaipur unit. Specialist hand work, carving, turning, cane and rattan weaving, upholstery, goes to long-standing artisan partners in Rajasthan, and we inspect their work at every handover. We would rather tell you that plainly than claim a single building does everything.
Can I visit the workshop?
Yes, on any working day. Trade buyers see the production floor mid-order, not a showroom. Tell us roughly when you are travelling and we will make sure there is real production running while you are there.
What if I cannot travel to India?
We run a live video walkthrough of about forty minutes at a time that suits your zone. You direct the camera. If your order is in production, we walk you to it and you see your own pieces.
How do you season timber, and why does it matter?
Air-dried in stacks, then kiln-treated to bring moisture content into the destination market’s range, typically 8–10% for centrally heated homes in the USA, UK and Europe. Furniture seasoned for Indian humidity shrinks and splits in a heated room. It is the most common reason Indian furniture exports fail, and it is entirely preventable.
Do you use particle board, MDF or veneer anywhere?
Our pieces are solid hardwood. Where a design includes cane, rattan, metal, glass, plywood backing panels or upholstery, it is named on the spec sheet. You will never find a component on your invoice described as solid wood when it is not.
Can we appoint a third-party inspection agency?
Yes, and we encourage it. SGS, Bureau Veritas, TÜV or your own agent, at whichever checkpoint you choose. We schedule production around their visit, give full floor access and share the report.
Who are the artisans, and can we tell their story?
Artisan families and small specialist units across Rajasthan. We can tell you who worked on your order, and we provide photographs, craft notes and workshop footage cleared for your catalogue, website, product tags and retail displays at no cost.
What happens if a piece fails QC?
It is corrected at that checkpoint or the component is remade. It does not move to the next stage and it does not ship. If a fault is found at final QC on a batch, we tell you and give you a revised date rather than shipping to protect a deadline.
How do you handle a repeat order matching the first one?
The approved sample, the finish reference and the artisan unit that built it are all recorded against the model. Continuity of people is what actually makes a repeat match, which is why we keep our partners on year-round work.
Can you scale if my orders grow?
Yes, through partner units working on our drawings and under our QC. We disclose that in writing rather than quietly subcontracting, and the inspection and sample-approval process stays identical.

About our manufacturing

Solid wood furniture manufacturing unit in Jaipur, India

Uthsavi is a women-led solid wood furniture manufacturer with its own workshop in Jaipur, Rajasthan, supplying importers, distributors, retailers, interior studios and hospitality buyers overseas. Production runs from timber selection and seasoning through joinery, hand carving, cane weaving, assembly, finishing and quality control to export packing and carton marking, on one floor, with specialist hand work carried out by artisan partners across Rajasthan whose output we inspect at every handover.

Jaipur is one of the last places in the world where carved and woven hardwood furniture is still made by hand at prices a retailer can build a margin on. What has historically been missing is a manufacturer who can hold that craft to export standards and answer an importer’s technical questions properly. That is the work Uthsavi does: Indian hand craftsmanship, specified, documented and packed for the market it is going to.

Furniture factory transparency for importers

Buyers sourcing furniture from India carry real risk, a supplier they have not met, a floor they have not seen, materials they cannot verify. We answer that with access rather than assurances: workshop visits on any working day, live video walkthroughs on request, third-party inspection by SGS, Bureau Veritas, TÜV or your own agent at any checkpoint, and photographic records at frame, pre-finish, final and packing stage.

  • Four documented QC checkpoints on every order, with defined reject criteria
  • Moisture content controlled to the destination market, logged twice per piece
  • Approved physical sample as the reference for the whole batch
  • Export packing engineered per freight route, with cartons photographed before dispatch
  • Fumigation, phytosanitary and origin documentation prepared ahead of dispatch

Handcrafted by Rajasthan’s artisan communities

Hand carving, wood turning, jaali work and cane weaving are inherited skills in Rajasthan, held inside families rather than taught in schools. Uthsavi works with those artisan units directly, on agreed per-piece rates and year-round volume rather than seasonal work. That continuity is why a repeat order matches the first one, and it gives our overseas partners a provenance story they can actually document, artisan photographs, craft notes and workshop footage are provided for your catalogue and retail use at no cost.

Built to export specification

Furniture made for export is a different specification from furniture made for the Indian market: kiln seasoning to 8–10% moisture for centrally heated homes, mattress and seat sizing to local convention, knock-down construction for containers and staircases, disclosed finishes for compliance review, biosecurity paperwork for Australia and New Zealand, and private label carton artwork, barcoding and country-of-origin marking. We quote the export specification, not the domestic one.

Visit the wholesale and export page for order terms, capabilities and the catalogue request form, or book a workshop walkthrough and see the floor for yourself before you commit to anything.
